Background Psychoactive substance use among youth is an emerging public health issue in Nepal. This exploratory study aimed to better understand the drivers of psychoactive substance use among Nepalese youth in Rupandehi district of Nepal. Materials and methods This study used a qualitative approach for data collection. Both in-depth interviews (IDI, seven participants) and focus group discussions (FGD, 13 participants) were conducted among study participants who self-reported as psychoactive substance users or had history of psychoactive substance use. Participants for IDI were aged between 11 and 24 years and between 18 and 35 years old for FGDs. Semi-structured interview guides were prepared separately for IDIs and FDGs. Interviews were conducted in Nepali language and were audio recorded, which were there transcribed and translated into English for coding and analyses. In addition, interviews notes were taken by two research assistants. An inductive thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Results This study identified a range of drivers of psychoactive substances use among Nepalese youths. Themes included (i) socio-cultural factors, (ii) individual factors, (iii) academic environment, (iv) physical environment and the (v) influence of media. The socio-cultural factors were categorized into sub-themes of family relationships, ethnic identity and psychoactive substance use and lack of social acceptance. Individual factors included peer pressure, stress relief and coping with financial challenges. Accessibility and availability of psychoactive substances in the surrounding environment and lack of monitoring and reinforcement of rules/ law and regulations were other drivers to psychoactive substance use among this Nepalese youth cohort. Conclusion Our study identified several important drivers of psychoactive substance use among youth in the Rupandehi district of Nepal. Future works are anticipated to further explore youth initiation and use of psychoactive substances and support the design of interventions that address these risk factors to reduce and prevent subsequent harms.

The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of persons undergoing the community-based drug rehabilitation program in the City of Bogo, Cebu, Philippines. The focus was to uncover the stories of these people in order to gain a better understanding of their journey. The study uses Husserlian's descriptive phenomenology design. Using purposive sampling, seven (7) informants were identified. An interview guide was developed and validated; afterwards, a semi-structure one-on-one interview was conducted. Four main themes emerged with theme 1: Wrong Turn with subthemes: (a) Curiosity, (b) Peer influence, (c) pleasure and desirable effects of drug use, (d) relapse before RERE continuing or long term drug use and (e) life issues; theme 2: Road Bumps and Blocks with subthemes: (a) interpersonal impact of drug use, (b) interpersonal impact of drug use and (c) extrapersonal impact of drug use; theme 3: Road to Recovery with subthemes: (a) acceptance of the existing problem,(b) reason for entering RERE, (c) intrapersonal challenges while on recovery process, (d) interpersonal challenges while on recovery and (e) extrapersonal challenges while on recovery process; and theme 4: Walking on the Right Path, with subthemes; (a) perception about RERE program, (b) perseverance to change, (c) renewal of intrapersonal aspect, (d) renewal of interpersonal relationship and (e) renewal of extrapersonal aspect: modelling and offering help to others. The informants described their chaotic experiences of addiction and their decision and motivation to change. An increased in understanding of the life of addiction and struggles and hardships in recovery can guide nurses, social workers, policy-law makers, other LGU members and future researchers in dealing with this phenomenon.

Introduction: Medical and Dental students are vulnerable to higher levels of psychological distress than other age matched peers. Many studies reveal that there is high prevalence of psychoactive substance use and psychiatric co-morbidities among them. Objective: To identify prevalence of substance use (alcohol, nicotine, cannabis) among medical and dental students. Methods: A cross sectional study was done among medical and dental students (2nd year to interns) of B PKIHS. A total of 600 students were enrolled through systematic random sampling and only 588(98%) responded. Semi-structured questionnaire was used which included socio-demographic variables, AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test), Fagerstrom (for Nicotine dependence) and Cannabis Abuse Screening Test (CAST). Result: The mean age of participants was 22±2years. Among them, 61.2% (360) were male; 69.7% (410) were MBBS; 90.5% (532) were Nepalese and 9.5% (56) were Indians. The prevalence of alcohol users was 47.75% (281) in which 32% (90) were harmful users. Among 19.55% (115) nicotine users; 56.5% (65), 37.4% (43), 6.1% (7) had low, low to moderate and moderate dependence respectively. The prevalence of cannabis users was 9% (53) with 45.3% (24), 18.9% (10) having low and high addiction respectively. Conclusion: High percentage of medical and dental students showed substance use, harmful use and dependence. It is expected that they have knowledge about the harmful consequences of psychoactive substances.
