Causes for low tuber yields of transplants from in vitro potato plantlets of early cultivars after field planting

Abstract: SUMMARYTransplant crops derived from in vitro produced plantlets of cultivars differing in earliness were grown in three experiments in three years in the Netherlands, during field periods of maximally 12 weeks. Seed tuber crops were included in the first year. Fresh tuber yield was analysed as the result of the radiation intercepted by the crop's canopy (AIR ; accumulated intercepted radiation), the efficiency of conversion of intercepted radiation into dry matter (RCC ; radiation conversion coefficient), the… Show more

“…Tables 6 and 7 show that, the maximum marketing yield among S. tuberosum varieties was belonged to Agria and the lowest one to Sante. The maximum level of tuber production was of Maradona and the lowest one in Sante, which is in agreement with others reports [5,20].…”

“…Proper canopy development after field transplanting is crucial for achieving high yields. Glasshouse-raised transplants from very early cultivars can show an extremely poor field performance (Haverkort et al 1991a;Dixon 1993;Lommen 1999). This was shown to be caused by the relatively large portion of daily dry matter production immediately after transplanting being invested in tuber growth rather than in haulm growth, in early cultivars (Lommen 1999).…”
