Sir W i l l i a m H e n r y P e r k i n , dessen Tod wir am 14. Juli 1907 zu beklagen hatten, wurde in London am 12. Marz 1838 geboren. E r war der jungste Sohn des Baumeisters und Bauunternehmers G e o r g e F o w l e r P e r k i n , der I865 im Alter von 63 Jahren starb. Der junge Perkin erhielt den eraten Unterricht i n einer Privatschnle und besuchte dann splter die City of London School; hier trat zuerskso darf man wohl sagendie ihm angeborene Begabunp; Rip die Chemie als Wissenschrrft deutlich in Erscheinnng, und zwar dabk der Forderung, welche der verstorbene T h o m a s H a l ldamals Hlassenlehrer an der erwiihnten Schuledem Kdaben zuteil werden lie& Die Naturwissenschaften bildeten in jener Zeit allerdings anscheinend noch keinen allgemein anerkannten Bestandteil des Lehr-und Erziehungsplanes i n der City ol London School, denn H a l l muote, um wiichentlich zwei Vortrlge ttber Chemie und Physik halten zu kbnneh, eine entsprechende Verkiirzung der Mittagspause eintreten lassen. Seih Schiiler Perkin erwartete diese ff nterrichtsstunden stets mit freudigster Ungeduld und lief3 sogar ihretwqfen o€t sein Mittagsmahl im Stich; sein Enthusinsmus sah sich dann auch b& belohnt, denn er riickte rasch in eine bevorzugte Stellung ein, in der es seine Aufgabe q*ar, die Versuche vonubereiten und H a l l bei den Demomtrationen wiihrend des Vortrags zu untersttitzeh.Wie dies allgemein bei Miinnerd zu beobachten ist, die ipgend einem Zweig der Wissenschaft ihren besonderen Stempel aufgeprkgf haben, trat auch bei Perkid di8 sich durch angeborene Geschickllchkeit verratende Begabung nnd Neigung ftir ein Speaialfach verhllltuis-mal3ig frtih hervor, und es ist sicherhh als ein besonders glGeklicher Umstand zu preisen, da6 Perkin an jeneni ersten kritischen Wende-
