“…Until recently, only BF 3 ‐based initiating systems, i.e., complexes of BF 3 with alcohols or ethers in hexanes, are known to produce HR PIB containing 75–85% of exo ‐olefin end groups (BASF process) at elevated temperatures (from −30 to 0 °C) 21, 22. Very recently, we discovered that the use of AlCl 3 in a form of complex with ether allowed to synthesize HR PIB containing 85–95% of exo ‐olefin end groups in contrast to conventional PIB typically obtained using neat AlCl 3 23, 24. The similar initiating systems were later proposed by Wu and coworkers 25, 26.…”

“…The polymerization of IB could only be initiated with water, but monomer conversions and exo-olefin content (60−70%) were lower and polydispersity indices (PDIs) were much higher than in polar solvents. 9 Mechanistic studies suggested that the reaction of water with AlCl 3 ·R 2 O yields H + AlCl 3 OH − that initiates polymerization and releases free ether, which subsequently abstracts a β-proton from the growing chain end before it diffuses from the immediate vicinity of the polymer cation. 12 Since the AlCl 3 ·R 2 O complex yields PIB exoolefins with high selectivity only in polar solvent and only water initiates the polymerization, we have studied other Lewis acid/ Lewis base complexes that could potentially initiate polymerization of IB in conjunction with conventional cationic initiators in nonpolar solvents.…”

“…However, AlCl 3 has poor solubility in organic solvents . To enhance the selectivity of polymerization reaction, ethyl acetate (EtOAc) was introduced to AlCl 3 for developing an AlCl 3 .EtOAc complex . This coinitiator complex was utilized herein to synthesize laccol polymer (LP) and laccol‐styrene copolymers.…”
