Cationic polymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether coinitiated with heteropolyacid or its salts in aqueous medium

Abstract: The suspension cationic polymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether (IBVE) in aqueous medium could be achieved by using H3PW12O40, AlPW12O40, FePW12O40, K3PW12O40, or Na3PW12O40 as efficient water‐tolerant coinitiators in the presence of HCl. The addition reaction of IBVE with H2O occurred to form IBVE–H2O adduct and then subsequent decomposition immediately took place or turned to acetaldehyde diisobutyl acetal (A) in the presence of AlPW12O40, and (A) decomposed rapidly to form 2‐isobutanol (B) and acetaldehyde (… Show more

“…[6] Such lack of reactivity was attributed to the complete dissociation of the Yb(OTf) 3 salt in water with the formation of ahydrated Yb cation, [7] which is aw eak Lewis acid. Styrene, [8] cyclopentadiene, [9] isoprene, [10] and even acrolein [11] polymerizations were performed in aqueous suspension and/or emulsion for the first time using as ingular Lewis acid, B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 , which does not decompose in water.…”

“…The 1 H NMR spectrum of the product revealed the presence of an internal CC bond and two kinds of chain‐end structures, acetal and aldehyde, suggesting that side reactions occurred, such as side‐chain abstraction (Supporting Information Fig. S2) …”

“…Isobutyl vinyl ether (IBVE) is selected as one of the VE monomers, and is known to be an active monomer for cationic polymerization . The versatile polymers, poly(VE)s, may be used in various applications by exploiting their high polarizability and the flexibility of their side chains …”

“…Given our track record of devising aqueous cationic polymerizations, we shifted our attention to water soluble HPAs as the heteropoly anion may exhibit a high enough degree of lipophilicity to transit into a suspended monomer droplet. During the composition of this article, we discovered that HPAs had already been employed in highly acidic aqueous media for the polymerization of vinyl ethers (VEs) . Our approach differed, focusing on sustainable reaction conditions with particular emphasis on safety and recyclability.…”
