Cation exchange resins based on phosphonomethyl‐substituted phenols

Abstract: Phosphonomethyl-substituted phenols are readily obtained from o-hydroxymethylated phenols and trialkyl phosphites. The free acids, incorporated into phenol-formaldehyde resins, act as cation exchangers with remarkable selectivity for different metal ions. 0 1992, Hilthig & Wepf Verlag, Base1 CCC 0025-1 16X/92/$05.00

“…Chelating groups can be incorporated in order to increase the sorb or modify the selectivity of ions. 28,29 So, phenolic resins have been used for extraction of heavy metals, [30][31][32][33][34][35] lanthanide metal ions, [36][37][38][39][40] and radionuclides. 29,[41][42][43][44][45][46][47][48] It is believed that polymers with a combination of diglycolamide derivatives and phenolic group can improve the existing sorbents system developed for REEs extraction.…”

“…Phosphorus-containing polymers are involved in a large range of applications. For example, they have been used as adhesion promoters for paints, lacquers, and adhesives, 1 flame-retardant additives, 2 complexing agents to recover metal ions from the environment and industrial liquids, 3 and agents for controlling crystallization of CaCO 3 4 and also have been proposed for use in tissue engineering and drug controlled release because of their biocompatibility and biodegradability. 5,6 One of the methods of incorporating phosphorus functionality into polymers is the polymerization or copolymerization of phosphorus-containing vinyl monomers such as vinyl and allyl phosphonates.…”

“…Based on 1, we recently obtained a cation-exchange resin which clearly discriminates between different metal cations [4], but the use of 2 seems even more promising. To incorporate these ligands into polymer networks, at least one of the ring positions is needed.…”
