“…The DD performances are evaluated by the dialysis coefficient of NaOH (U OH ) and separation factor (S OH/AlO2 ). [23,29]. The OH -ions may be transported through the formation and broken of hydrogen bonds along the -OH groups, which is in accordance with the adsorption-desorption mechanism [5,45].…”

“…Hence, the -CHO group can not fully restrict the swelling effect of multiple -SO 3 Na groups. The IEC P values are in the range of 0.98 -1.36 mmol/g, which are higher than those of other reported PVA based membranes, such as 0.14 -0.44 mmol/g [29], 0.76 -0.90 mmol/g [23] or 0.61 -1.21 mmol/g [33]. The higher IEC P values are partly attributed to the effective oxidation of -SH groups.…”

“…For membranes heated at 100 °C, the TS and E b of all the samples are in the range of 40.7–49.9 MPa and 52.1–121.1%, respectively. The TS of the membranes is higher than those of previous PVA-based ion exchangeable membranes but exhibits similar trends [13]. The reasons might be as follows: The addition of boronic acid copolymer enhanced the membrane crosslinking degree and thus TS increased first; excessive content of boronic acid copolymer affected the aggregation of the PVA main chains and thus the TS decreased when the dosage of boronic acid copolymer was higher than 2%.…”

“…The microstructure of the membranes was observed by microscopic scanning electron microscopy (S-4800, Hitachi Company, Tokyo, Japan) after gold coating treatment. The water uptake (W R ), ion exchange capacities (IECs), and alkali resistance of the membrane samples were tested by the methods that have been described in our previous works, and two parallel samples were tested synchronously [ 27 , 28 ].…”
