Catholic Versus Communist: An Ongoing Issue—The Role of Organizational Affiliation in Accessing the Policy Arena

This article analyses the role of organizations’ ideological affiliation in shaping information networks within civil society and in granting access to the p… Show more

“…The only exception is Genoa. The effects of the political cleavage between NPOs linked with the Christian Democratic Party and those connected with the Communist Party are still present at the local level as has been shown in some recent works, both when considering the third sector per se (Biorcio & Vitale, 2016; Tosi & Vitale, 2009) and when considering governance arrangements (Bassoli, 2017). Among the eligible cities, Genoa is thus the only case close to the Italian average with respect to the number of NPOs per thousand inhabitants (ranking 59/112), which has not been subject to the presence of a clear subculture in the past 40 years.…”

“…For example, the connectedness of a node or the entire network can be regarded as measuring social capital of individuals or communities (Herzog & Yang, 2018;Xu and Saxton 2019;Yang, Zhou, and Zhang 2019;Nakazato & Lim, 2016). Network analysis has been also applied to studying interorganizational collaboration (Bassoli, 2017;Shwom, 2015), resource distribution (Lai, Tao, and Cheng 2017), interlocking board networks (Ma & DeDeo, 2018;Paarlberg, Hannibal, and McGinnis Johnson 2020;Ma, 2020), and the structure of civil societies (Seippel, 2008;Diani, Ernstson, and Jasny 2018). Networks can even be analyzed without real-world data.…”

“…However, the importance of the Catholic Church lies not only in its formal position. Italy is home to many organisations of Catholic inspiration which form an active part of the civil society, and their behaviours are driven by their affiliations (Bassoli 2017;Ozzano and Giorgi 2016: 180). The importance of this religious affiliation becomes clear when examining the key organisations in several fields including the media, nonprofit organisations and anti-gambling coalitions.…”
