Catheter-associated urinary tract infection

Abstract: The efficacy of nitrofurazone-coated urinary catheter in inhibitory activity of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) was evaluated. The incidence rate and onset of CAUTI after catheterisation of standard silicone urinary catheters and nitrofurazone-coated catheters was compared. There was no statistical significance between the two groups in the incidence rate of CAUTI. However, in patients who had indwelling urinary catheters for 5-7 days, the incidence rate of CAUTI was significantly lower in … Show more

“…We found a significant association between catheter related urinary tract infection and age, female gender, and severity of loss of function before surgey which is in line with literaure reports 11,12 . However, we could not evaluate correlation between urinary stent and length of using urinary catheter and urinay tract infection.…”

“…However, we could not evaluate correlation between urinary stent and length of using urinary catheter and urinay tract infection. It is estimated that up to 69% of catheter related urinary tract infection can be prevented using appropriate infection prevention strategies such as the removal of the catheter as soon as possible or avoidance of its use [12][13][14] . Considering 38% of physicians were not aware of the status of urinary catheter use for their patients 12,15 , reminder…”

“…One of the limitations of this approach is the need for frequent nebulisation due to the negligible retention of the nebulised antibiotic at the luminal surface of the ET tube. Whilst it has been reported that there is minimal systemic absorption of gentamicin and good tolerance within the airways when administered by nebulisation 20,21 , it is clinically preferable to minimise the exposure of patients to antimicrobial agents to abate the development of multidrug resistant pathogens [22][23][24] .…”

“…Studies have reported that the most common nosocomial infections are urinary tract infections (14). However, none of these studies provided specific data on the organisms causing nosocomial infections.…”
