Although they occupy a territory whose boundaries are determined by law, the Páez of southern highland Colombia maintain hegemony over this space through a set of practices and activities which crosscut economic, social, political, and ideological domains as well as levels of social integration. Choice of particular strategies for territorial maintenance is determined by social and historical context. Once employed, these strategies are then incorporated into the body of historical knowledge which provides examples for future action, and which is mapped out in myths associated with particular geographical features.
