At a Glance Commentary Scientific Knowledge on the SubjectAcute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a common cause of morbidity and mortality within the intensive care setting, and there is a lack of effective pharmacological treatments. The protease cathepsin S is known to contribute to pathological inflammation and represents a potential target for treatment, though its status and role in ARDS is unknown.
