A novel actinomycete, designated strain 3H-GS17 T , was isolated from the head of an ant (Lasius fuliginosus L.) and characterized using a polyphasic approach. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity studies showed that strain 3H-GS17 T belongs to the genus Actinocorallia with high sequence similarity to Actinocorallia glomerata JCM 9376 T (98.13 %) and Actinocorallia longicatena JCM 9377 T (97.64 %). The chemotaxonomic properties of strain 3H-GS17 T were also consistent with those of members of the genus Actinocorallia. The cell wall contained mesodiaminopimelic acid and whole-cell sugars were ribose, mannose, glucose, galactose and madurose. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9(H 4 ), MK-9(H 6 ) and MK-9(H 8 ). The phospholipid profile consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylinositol mannoside. The major fatty acids were C 16 : 0 and C 18 : 1 !7с. A combination of DNA-DNA hybridization experiments and phenotypic tests were carried out between strain 3H-GS17 T and its closely related strains, which further clarified their relatedness and demonstrated that 3H-GS17 T could be distinguished from these strains. Therefore, strain 3H-GS17 T is concluded to represent a novel species of the genus Actinocorallia, for which the name Actinocorallia lasiicapitis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 3H-GS17 T (=DSM 100595 T =CGMCC 4.7282 T ).The genus Actinocorallia was first proposed by Iinuma et al. (1994) as a member of the family Thermomonosporaceae and its description was emended by Zhang et al. (2001). Members of the genus form spore chains on the aerial mycelium. The genus is characterized chemotaxonomically by the presence of meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell wall, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylinositol as the major phospholipids, MK-9 (H 4 ), MK-9(H 6 ) and MK-9(H 8 ) as the predominant menaquinones, and hexadecanoic, 14-methylpentadecanoic, octadecanoic and 19-methyloctadecanoic acids as the predominant fatty acids (Trujillo & Goodfellow, 2012). At the time of writing, the genus comprises seven species with validly published names (http://www.bacterio.net/actinocorallia.html). During a study of the diversity of symbiotic actinomycetes in ants, strain 3H-GS17 T was isolated from the head of Lasius fuliginosus L. In this study, we performed a polyphasic taxonomic analysis on this strain, and propose that it is a representative of a novel species of the genus Actinocorallia.Strain 3H-GS17 T was isolated from the head of L. fuliginosus L. collected from Northeast Agriculture University (Harbin, Heilongjiang, China). The actinomycete strains K12-0408 T and K12-0792 were isolated on CM-cellulose agar from rhizosphere soil of a pteridophytic plant collected in Tokyo prefecture, Japan. Their taxonomic positions were determined using a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strains K12-0408 T and K12-0792 were positioned within the family Micromonosporaceae. The strains formed extensively branched aerial and substrate mycelia. Long chains of cylindrical spores with smooth surfaces were formed on aerial hyphae. The cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid, and galactose, glucose, mannose and ribose were detected in whole-cell hydrolysates. The predominant menaquinones were MK-10(H 4 ) and MK-10(H 6 ). The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C 17 : 0 and anteiso-C 17 : 0 2-OH. The DNA G+C contents of strains K12-0408 T and K12-0792 were 69.6 and 69.7 mol%, respectively. Based on data from the present polyphasic taxonomic study, strains K12-0408 T and K12-0792 represent a novel genus, for which the name Actinorhabdospora gen. nov. is proposed, with strain K12-0408 T (=NBRC 111897 T =TBRC 5327 T ) as the type strain of the type species, Actinorhabdospora filicis sp. nov.The family Micromonosporaceae was first described by Krasil'nikov (1938) and the description was amended by Koch et al. (1996), Stackebrandt et al. (1997) and Zhi et al. (2009) on the basis of chemotaxonomic data and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. During the characterization of actinomycetes isolated from rhizospheric soil of fern plants, strains K12-0408 T and K12-0792 were recovered. Phylogenetic analysis based on nearly complete 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the two strains were distinct from genera within the family Micromonosporaceae. Herein, we report the results of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genomic analyses of strains K12-0408 T and K12-0792, which suggested that the strains represented a novel species of a new genus.Strains K12-0408 T and K12-0792 were isolated from rhizosphere soil of ferns (pteridophyte plants) collected at Fussa and Hamura city, respectively, located in Tokyo prefecture, Japan. The CM-cellulose (CMC) medium used for the isolation procedure contained the following: 1.0 % CM-cellulose sodium salts, 0.1 % K 2 HPO 4 , 0.1 % L-asparagine monohydrate, 0.0001 % FeSO 4 Á7H 2 O, 0.0001 % MnCl 2 Á4H 2 O, 0.0001 % ZnSO 4 Á7H 2 O and 1.5 % agar (adjusted to pH 7.0±0.2 with 1 M NaOH). The medium was supplemented with 0.025 % nalidixic acid and 0.02 % Benlate (Dupont) to minimize and inhibit growth of unwanted bacteria and fungi, respectively. Two novel actinobacteria, designated strains NEAU-Jh1-4 T and NEAU-Wp2-0 T , were isolated from muddy soil collected from a riverbank in Jiaohe and a dandelion root collected from Harbin, respectively. A polyphasic study was carried out to establish the taxonomic positions of these two strains. The phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences of strains NEAU-Jh1-4 T and NEAU-Wp2-0 T indicated that strain NEAU-Jh1-4 T clustered with Streptosporangium nanhuense NEAU-NH11 T (99.32 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Streptosporangium purpuratum CY-15110 T (98.30 %) and Streptosporangium yunnanense CY-11007 T (97.95 %) and strain NEAU-Wp2-0 T clustered with 'Streptosporangium sonchi ' NEAU-QS7 (99.39 %), 'Streptosporangium kronopolitis' NEAU-ML10 (99.26 %), 'Streptosporangium shengliense' NEAU-GH7 (98.85 %) and Streptosporangium longisporum DSM 43180 T (98.69 %). Moreover, morphological and chemotaxonomic properties of the two isolates also confirmed their affiliation to the genus Streptosporangium. However, the low level of DNA-DNA hybridization and some phenotypic characteristics allowed the isolates to be differentiated from the most closely related species. Therefore, it is proposed that strains NEAU-Jh1-4 T and NEAUWp2-0 T represent two novel species of the genus Streptosporangium, for which the name Streptosporangium jiaoheense sp. nov. and Streptosporangium taraxaci sp. nov. are proposed. The type strains are NEAU-Jh1-4 T (=CGMCC 4.7213 T =JCM 30348 T ) and NEAU-Wp2-0 T (=CGMCC 4.7217 T =JCM 30349 T ), respectively.The genus Streptosporangium, belonging to the family Streptosporangiaceae (Goodfellow et al., 1990), was established by Couch (1955) with Streptosporangium roseum as type species and its description was emended by Stackebrandt et al. (1997) and Intra et al. (2014) to accommodate organisms characteristic of forming spherical sporangia that enclose non-motile sporangiospores on aerial mycelium, with the exception of Streptosporangium jomthongense, a strain that produces tightly packed, single spores on aerial hyphae (Intra et al., 2014). As part of a programme to discover novel actinobacteria, strains NEAU-Jh1-4 T and NEAU-Wp2-0 T were isolated and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomy analysis.
