Category of functional tooth units in relation to the number of teeth and masticatory ability in Japanese adults

Abstract: The purposes of this study were (1) to examine differences in dental status among various age groups, particularly, focusing on whether subjects retained 20 or more natural teeth, and (2) to investigate the relationship among dental status, the number and categories of functional tooth units (FTUs), and masticatory ability. A dental examination and self-administered questionnaire were conducted in a total of 2,164 residents aged 40 to 75 years who dwelt in Japan. The percentage of subjects with 20 and more nat… Show more

“…Where this study reports “more added value” per tooth added for FDPs, other studies reported better oral-health-related quality of life and better masticatory efficiency after FDP treatment compared to RDP treatment [9, 17, 18]. For chewing ability, the discerning capacity and accuracy of the classification system has previously been demonstrated in a Vietnamese population [12].…”

“…However, if the total number of functional tooth units increases as a result of removable dental prostheses (RDPs), masticatory function did not yield a significant improvement [9]. Fixed dental prostheses (FDPs), however, are thought to provide similar functionality as natural teeth [9, 10]. For this reason, RDPs and FDPs in cases of upgrading dentitions to higher levels of functionality have to be distinguished.…”

“…Many reports have investigated the relationship between diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease, but none have examined the possible influence of diabetes mellitus on the loss of posterior teeth, often evaluated with indexes like Functional Tooth Units (FTUs) Ueno et al, 2008;Ueno et al, 2010).…”

“…However, there have been few large-scale surveys providing data on occlusal condition 4,7,9) . The Survey of Dental Diseases in Japan 8) and the National Health Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 10) provide important data concerning oral health status, but they do not include any data on occlusal condition.…”
