Categorization and association analysis of risk factors for adverse drug events

Abstract: This review introduced new categories and subtypes of risk factors for ADE. The broad and in-depth coverage of risk factors and their association patterns elucidate the complexity of risk factor analysis. Managing risk factors for ADE is crucial for improving patient safety, particularly for the elderly, comorbid, and polypharmacy patients. Some under-explored risk factors such as genetics, mental health and wellness, education, lifestyle, and physical environment invite future research.

“…Risk factors are defined as conditions or measurements associated with the probability of disease or death not necessarily recognized by the patient [15] [16] [17]. Managing risk factors for ADRs is crucial for improving patient safety, particularly for the elderly, comorbid, and polypharmacy patients [18]. ADRs have risk factors, and some are preventable.…”

“…Elderly age and concomitant drug use are known risk factors for ADRs. 15 Because women tend to live longer than men and take more medications simultaneously, this can induce additional synthetic associations.…”

“…Data from the USA reveal that adverse drug effects may account for up to 140 000 deaths annually, whereas about 10‐15% of bed days are due to adverse drug reactions or hospital‐acquired infections . However, many ADEs could be prevented or ameliorated through simple strategies . As clinical pharmacists possess an extensive knowledge on drug therapy, monitor ADEs and improve inappropriate prescribing, their participation in a multidisciplinary team is important to prevent or mitigate drug‐related adverse reactions.…”

“…Challenges for modern health care include inappropriate drug use, medication errors and adverse drug events (ADEs), for which the risk factors are regarded as the patients' age, polypharmacy, care transitions, frequent medication changes and a higher number of previous operations . On the one hand, polypharmacy becomes more complex for older patient, and orthopaedic patients are often not only elderly but also prescribed an average of six pre‐admission medications .…”
