Categorical Models of Childhood Disorder: A Conceptual and Empirical Analysis

Abstract: In this review we explore the clinical and scientific status of categorical models of childhood disorder. Three themes are developed. First, the practical origins of standardised category-based diagnostic schemes are examined along with their contemporary philosophical and psychological significance. Next, the impact that these systems have had on the science of child psychopathology is explored. We look at their link to the medical model and the assumption that childhood disorders are categorical, endogenous,… Show more

“…Debates continue about the relative merits of dimensional versus categorical approaches to the identification and understanding of child disorders (Fergusson & Horwood, 1995;Sonuga-Barke, 1998). Sroufe (1997) presented a cogent argument in favor of developmental or dimensional approaches, reminding us that children who qualify for a diagnosis often differ quantitatively rather than qualitatively from their age-mates.…”

“…However, both theoretical arguments and empirical evidence suggest that inattention and impulsivity-hyperactivity are distributed dimensionally in the population (Levy, Hay, McStephen, Wood, & Waldman, 1997;Sonuga-Barke, 1998) and linear relations between these symptoms and parenting behaviors are expected across the range of both symptom levels and parenting behaviors. For this reason, and to increase the applicability of findings to a broader group of mothers, we investigated the links between maternal inattentiveness, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, and parenting behaviors in a community sample.…”

“…Additionally, such analytic approaches may fail to find important relations among variables due to their nonlinear nature. Indeed, nonlinear relations may be a hallmark of categorical disorder constructs (Sonuga-Barke, 1998). These problems may be avoided or substantially reduced if such variables are instead approached categorically.…”
