This study focuses on the potential quantity of soil Pb remediation in a typical karst region of China, an area where previous research on the potential remediation quantity of Pb in soil has been scarce. In this study, 12,547 surface soil samples and 54 sets of soil-profile samples were collected. This analysis investigated the sources, concentrations, distribution, and reserve properties of soil Pb in the study region. Building upon these findings, a formula for calculating the potential remediation quantity of Pb in karst soils was derived. The results disclose variations in Pb content within the surface soil, with values spanning from 9.4 to 376.4 mg/kg and a background level of 72.97 mg/kg. Additionally, the Pb content in deep soil shows a spectrum from 1.6 to 160.9 mg/kg. Principal component analysis showed that the sources of Pb in karst soil were related to the geological background, agricultural fertilization, and mineral resources. Single-factor variance analysis demonstrated significant influences of topography, parent rock type, soil utilization, and soil type on soil Pb content. The spatial distribution of soil Pb, as determined by principal component analysis, was influenced by mineral distribution, geological background, and agricultural fertilization. The soil profile analysis showed that Pb concentrations followed a logarithmic distribution pattern with increasing depth. A formula for the potential remediation quantity of Pb was derived using a logarithmic model. This rational and representative formula establishes a foundation for the management of Pb-influenced soils in karst regions.

Instant soups and noodles are one of the most widely consumed commercial food products. These products are made from ingredients of animal (chicken, meat) and/or vegetable origin, in addition to various food additives that prolong the shelf life of the product. It should be noted that instant soups are a dehydrated product, whose water-removal process can increase the accumulation of contaminants, such as toxic metals (Al, Cd, or Pb), that are harmful to the health of consumers. The content of toxic metals (Al, Cd, and Pb) in a total of 130 samples of instant soups of different types (poultry, meat, and vegetables) was determined by ICP-OES (inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry). The Al content (32.28 ± 19.26), the Cd content (0.027 ± 0.016), and the Pb content (0.12 ± 0.13) in the vegetable soups were worth mentioning. Considering an intake of twenty grams (recommended by the manufacturer), the dietary intake of Al (19.56% of the TWI set at 1 mg/kg bw/week), the intake of Cd (6.59% of the TWI set at 2.5 µg/kg bw/week), and the Pb intake (16.18% of the BMDL set for nephrotoxic effects at 0.63 µg/kg bw/week and 6.84% of the BMDL set for cardiovascular effects at 1.50 µg/kg bw/week) in the population aged 3–10 years, instant soups are not recommended for the population aged 3–10 years, while their consumption does not pose a health risk for adults. However, it is necessary to consider the cooking water used in the preparation of these products, as it may increase exposure to these toxic metals, in addition to the rest of the diet.

The geochemical signature in alluvial soils is a witness of human activities that took place in a river catchment. Sampling of alluvial soils at depth, in combination with information on sedimentological history and age of samples, may even allow to reconstruct the pollution history of the river basin. In the present study, data on alluvial soils contaminated by a major pollution source were analyzed, with special attention for these soils as an archive for information on the pollution history of a river/river catchment, and on the postdepositional downward migration of metal(loid)s in the alluvial soils. Besides the lateral variation of soil properties and metal(loid) concentrations in the alluvial soils, the vertical distribution of metal(loid)s in soil profiles, as well as the evolution of soil composition in relation to the distance from the river, was addressed. The postdepositional mobilization of Cd was evaluated in a fine-scale sampled alluvial soil core, by comparing data from 137Cs dating with data about the Cd emissions through time and by using leaching tests to calculate the downward migration of Cd. A substantial amount of Cd could leach from superficial to deeper soil layers. Therefore, the low-resolution (cm-scale) sampling of the alluvial soil was not reliable to reconstruct the pollution history of the river catchment, because the elevated chloride-concentrations in the river water increased the downward leaching of Cd through the formation of chloro-complexes. Moreover, the variability in flooding and sedimentation regimes along the river resulted in a heterogeneous composition of the alluvial soils, allowing very large differences in metal(loid) concentrations in places only a few meters apart.
