“…Datry et al [15] determined this element content in the sediments from infiltration basins for rain runoffs in the vicinity of Lyon on the level of 623-1148, whereas Petavy et al [10] noted lead concentrations in the sediments from roads in western France ranging from 183-424 mg · kg -1 . Birch and McCready [16] reported lead content in the sediments originating from urbanized areas in Sydney on the level of 880 mg · kg -1 , while Murakami et al [17] determined this metal level in the sediments from runoffs from the roads in Tokyo up to 210 mg · kg -1 . “…Nevertheless, ecological impacts of stormwater on Sydney estuary have been exemplified by Stark (1998) and Courtenay et al (2005), who detected significant species assemblage shifts in invertebrate communities affected by stormwater pollution. Although research has primarily focused on ecological impacts associated with contaminants delivered during high-flow conditions, base-flow is likely to have significant environmental implications since these conditions have been identified as a primary cause of elevated concentrations of metals and nutrients in sediments near stormwater drain outlets in Sydney estuary (Birch and McCready 2009). Low-flushing rates in Sydney estuary during dry weather present highly-favourable conditions for accumulation of metals, nutrients and TSS contributed by base-flow conditions to sediments by chemical and biological processes (Förstner and Wittmann 1979).…”
