Catch Rate Estimation for Roving and Access Point Surveys

Abstract: Optimal designs of recreational angler surveys may require complemented surveys, in which different contact methods are used to estimate effort and catch. All common methods of estimating catch involve on-site interviews that may either be based on access (complete trip) or roving (incomplete trip) interviews. In roving surveys, anglers to be interviewed on a given day arc intercepted with a probability proportional to the length of their completed fishing trip, whereas in access surveys, anglers arc intercept… Show more

“…Monthly estimates and associated variances were calculed following methods described by Malvestuto et al (1978), Malvestuto (1996), Pollock et al (1994), and Pollock et al (1997). The basic process of the extrapolations is as follows.…”

“…Total catch is then estimated by multiplying the total effort by the CPUE. Hoenig et al (1997) and Pollock et al (1997) discuss the properties of the two estimators of the CPUE while Hoenig et al (1993) give methods for estimating the sportsfishing effort. These papers should be consulted for further references.…”

“…Different methodologies and models have been proposed and applied to estimate CPUE in smallscale fisheries (Gómez-Muñoz, 1990;Pollock et al, 1997;Kirchner and Beyer, 1999;Neis et al, 1999). Gómez-Muñoz (1990), developed a simple model to estimate CPUE and total catch in multi-species small-scale fisheries.…”
