Catch composition and management of daytime purse seine fishery on the Southern Mediterranean Sea Coast, Abu Qir Bay, Egypt

Abstract: The present work aimed to obtain precise data on the catch of the purse seine net operating at daytime from sunrise till noon in Abu Qir Bay during 1997 and 1998. Sardine, anchovy, mullet and rabbitfish were recorded as the main target fish groups. Twenty-seven species were recorded as by-catch species. Catch per unit effort was estimated to be 93 kg/day/boat. The percentage of each target species in the catch and its length frequency distribution were presented. The length range of by-catch species and the se… Show more

“…Similar to adult maps, our habitat adequacy maps for eggs also indicated potential spawning grounds for anchovy in the Gulf of Gabes in Tunisia, which agrees with the limited anchovy ichthyoplankton research in this area (e.g., Zarrad et al. , 2006) as well as the coasts of Egypt (e.g., El Haweet, 2001) and the northeastern corner of the Levantine Basin (e.g., Bariche et al. , 2006).…”

“…Similarly, in the south part of the basin along the North African coast where information on small pelagic nursery grounds is generally lacking, persistent areas are indicated in the coastal waters of Morocco and Algeria, the Gulf of Gabes in Tunisia and the Nile Delta area (Figs 1, 7 and 8). These areas match the distribution grounds of sardine, as landings information from local fisheries confirm (El Haweet, 2001; Ben Abdallah and Gaamour, 2005; Ramzi et al. , 2006).…”

“…During the winter sardine potential habitat appears to be more extended, also covering most of the Moroccan and Algerian coasts. These areas are verified by the known distribution and the fishing grounds of sardine along these coasts (Djabali et al 1991, Ramzi et al 2006, Bedairia & Djebar 2009, the Tunisian and Libyan coastal waters as well as the Nile Delta region along the Egyptian coast (El-Haweet 2001, Ben Abdallah & Gaamour 2005. Further east, the information on the spatial distribution of sardine in the Levantine basin is currently lacking.…”
