Cataracts in systemic diseases and syndromes

Abstract: In the past year, harmony has developed among diverse areas of research in cataractogenesis. A number of epidemiologic studies have identified new, or strengthened the role of previous, risk factors in the development of cataract. Age, tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, and inhaled corticosteroids have been implicated. Clinical observation of cataract in diseases such as cystic fibrosis, atopic dermatitis, Alzheimer's disease, and mitochondrial cytopathy have led to hypotheses of formation. The basic scienc… Show more

“…While the largest influencing factor for cataract formation is heredity, other risk factors such as smoking (29,30), steroid use (31), diabetes (29,32) and exposure to ionizing radiation also The statistical significance of the effect of radiation was determined by comparing each treatment group with the sham-radiation group with the matching diet supplement.…”

“…The Beaver Dam Eye Study suggested that serum lipids, glycated haemoglobin and oxidative stress may play a role in cataractogenesis [15]. Cardiovascular disease and associated risk factors were not thought to affect the development of age-related cataract [2]. A weak association between atherosclerosis-related morbidity and visually significant cataract has been reported and is strongest for people aged 65 to 69 years [11].…”

“…The greatest risk factor is age. Diabetes mellitus is also associated with the development of cortical and posterior sub capsular cataract [1]. The Beaver Dam Eye Study and the Cataract Patient Outcomes Research Team have reported an association between age-related cataracts and systemic cardiovascular or atherosclerotic disease [2].…”
