“…In our synthetic procedure, the mixture of B and B 2 O 3 was used as reactants, which will generate B 2 O 2 vapor at high temperature. The vapor boron source allows very efficient attack to metal oxide and assures a high wire yield [21]. In addition to, in a good agreement with our pervious experimental results, the presently used Fe 2 O 3 catalysts supported by nanoscale alumina play an important role in determining the diameter of metal borate nanowires.…”

“…The peaks with high intensity can be indexed appropriately as the calcite structure with the lattice parameters of a ¼ 0:461 nm and c ¼ 0:319 nm, which are slightly larger than those of the corresponding bulk materials (JCPDS, 32-0390). The lattice expansion phenomenon has been frequently observed for various nanoscale materials [21,24]. We also noticed that the observed GaBO 3 phase is similar to its bulk counterpart with respect to X-ray reflection intensities, but the (1 1 0) peak of the present GaBO 3 is stronger than the (1 0 4) peak, contrary to the standard bulk GaBO 3 , for which the ideal intensity ratio between the (1 1 0) and (1 0 4) peaks is B0.5 for a random specimen.…”

“…However, there are some drawbacks for SiC whisker-reinforced magnesium matrix composite, e.g., the higher cost of SiC whiskers [3]. Recently, metal borate compounds including aluminum borate (Al 18 B 4 O 33 and Al 4 B 2 O 9 ) [4][5][6] and magnesium borates (Mg 3 B 2 O 6 [7] and Mg 2 B 2 O 5 ) nanowires/nanotubes [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] have been synthesized successfully. These metal borates have good mechanical properties, such as high Young's modulus and strength, good chemical inertness, and low thermal expansion coefficient [8,13].…”

“…In the past few years, one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures, such as nanorods, nanotubes and nanobelts, in a ternary borate system have been investigated by many groups [1][2][3][4][5][6]. However, most of studies were focused on the potential application in the mechanical filed for the manufacture of reinforcing composites [7][8][9] and lubrication additive [10].…”
