Catalytic Reaction Model of Suicide

Abstract: Suicide is a devastating outcome of unresolved issues that affect mental health, general wellbeing and socioeconomic stress. The biology of suicidal behavior is still poorly understood, although progress has been made. Suicidal behavior runs in families and genetic studies have provided initial glimpses into potential genes that contribute to suicide risk. Here, we attempt to unify the biology and behavioral dimensions into a model that can guide research in this area. The proposed model envisions suicidal beh… Show more

“…In the MGM, the predictability of suicidal ideation was 38.5% due to partial correlations with hopelessness, feeling like a failure, and psychomotor change. Previous studies have also suggested that factors potentially exacerbating suicidal ideation include hopelessness (pessimism about the future), concentration difficulties, low motivation levels, and distress related to serious medical illnesses 103 105 . In our DAG, suicidal ideation was dependent on the joint probability distributions of feeling like a failure and hopelessness.…”

“…Diminished motivation to engage in life activities (known as anhedonia) is a hallmark feature of major depression and other psychiatric disorders and is also akin to the hopelessness or despair underlying suicidal ideation and behavior [57]. Elsewhere, we have discussed in detail how diminished motivation contributes to STBs [43].…”

“…We hypothesized that mutations in the C. elegans counterparts of suicide risk genes may produce relevant phenotypes, namely diminished motivation to search for food [40,43]. As a representative sample, we selected 17 strains for behavioral testing based on the criteria that mutations were not lethal or associated with phenotypes severe enough to interfere with testing.…”

“…On the question of why people die by suicide, several psychological models have been proposed to describe the journey from not being suicidal to suicide attempts or death by suicide (e.g., [82,105,113]).…”
