Al-Fe-, Al-Cu-, and Al-Fe-Cu-PILCs were synthesized, characterized and tested in the catalytic wet peroxide oxidation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP). An apparent induction period followed by a rapid oxidation was observed during the Fenton-like reaction, and the whole reaction could be modeled well using a Fermi's kinetic equation (R 2 = 0.9938~0.9993). The generation of hydroxyl radicals (HO • ) from surface-catalyzed decomposition of H 2 O 2 was the oxidation cause whereas the dissolution of active metals was its result. Accordingly, induction period was the cause of heterogeneous surface activation (catalysis or modification) for more HO • formed by decreasing pH. 4-CP oxidation proceeded via 4-chlorocatechol (major) and hydroquinone (minor) pathways, along the formation of main intermediate (5-chloro-1,2,4-benzentriol). Finally besides CO 2 , H 2 O and Cl − two main compounds (I and II) formed, where the former was identified as 2,4-dioxopentanedioic acid whereas the latter as ferric-oxalate complex. There were marked structural and active differences between Al-Fe-PILC and Al-Cu-PILC in which compared to the latter, the former possessed higher SSA and activity but its optimal calcination temperature was lower and the induction time was also longer. In addition, compound II accounted for a considerable proportion in Al-Fe-PILC system whereas compound I was almost only component in Al-Cu-PILC system.

Kaonilite-supported zero-valent iron (ZVI-K) was employed with H 2 O 2 to build a Fentonlike system. Batch tests were conducted to explore the characteristics and mechanisms of the system for nitrobenzene (NB) degradation. The results showed that ZVI-K was an efficient Fenton catalyst with several advantages, including an extended pH range to 7.02, a near-neutral final pH of the treated water, and excellent stability and reusability. NB degradation was affected by initial pH, initial H 2 O 2 concentration, and ZVI-K dose. For NB concentration of 38.6 mg/L, their optimum values were 4.61, 170 mg/L, and 0.025 g/L, respectively. Under the optimal conditions, NB degradation reached 92% at 480 min reaction time via ZVI-K reduction as well as homogeneous and heterogeneous Fenton reactions in the ZVI-K/H 2 O 2 system. During the first period of the treatments (<150 min), NB degradation was attributed by the reduction of ZVI-K and heterogeneous Fenton reactions. However, both simultaneously occurred on the surface of ZVI-K, thus affected each other and produced their antagonistic effects on each other. In the next period (>150 min), although limited amounts of iron were leached during NB degradation, the homogeneous Fenton reaction occurred, which benefited the ZVI-K reduction. Thus, the synergistic effect between the Fenton reaction and ZVI-K reduction occurred. Because all of these reactions simultaneously occurred and shared a synergistic effect, NB was degraded efficiently in the ZVI-K/H 2 O 2 system. Therefore, the system could be used to degrade NB.

Advance oxidation process was employed as a pretreatment of industrial wastewater. For this purpose, the use of heavy metals as a catalyst is necessary but also complicated because homogeneous catalysts are difficult to recover after reaction process. The heterogenization of Cu(II) ions was proposed by taking advantage of the adsorptive characteristics of polymeric matrices. Crosslinked poly(4-vinylpyridine) of 2 and 25% and poly(D-glucosamine) were tested as supports of copper. Adsorption was employed to heterogenize Cu(II) by considering the influences of pH and temperature on the process. The catalysts were evaluated by their metal content, catalytic behavior for the oxidation of phenol and leaching degree after reaction. Poly(4-vinylpyridine) 2% was the best material for Cu(II) immobilization with an adsorption capacity of 90 mg g 21 . Afterward, poly(4-vinylpyridine) 2%, Cu(II) achieved 64% of phenol conversion, which represents a favorable result for the oxidation of phenol as the model of industrial wastewater pretreatments.
