Catalytic oxidative desulfurization of diesel fuel utilizing a polymolybdate alumina supported catalyst: characterization, catalytic activity and mechanistic study

Abstract: The performance of oxidative desulfurization of commercial diesel by alumina supported polymolybdate based catalyst system was studied using tertbutyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as an oxidizing agent. Transition metals such as Fe, Co and Cu were introduced onto the surface of alumina, prior to the impregnation of MoO 3 . The results showed that the oxidation of sulfur in commercial diesel with TBHP decreased in the order: . Further investigations on doped molybdenum revealed that Fe/MoO 3 /Al 2 O 3 , calcined at 500… Show more

“…Nanoparticles improve the adsorption of sulfur compounds due to their large surface area [53] . Photocatalyst under UV [54] or visible light [55] , nano-sized silica particles including mesoporous silica [56] , aluminum oxide particles [57] , transition metal oxides [58] , activated carbons [59] , modified metal–organic frameworks [60] , Ni catalyst also called sponge metal [61] , nanocomposite [62] , graphene oxide [63] , activated carbon (AC)-supported phosphotungstic acid [64] and fly ash-modified fenton catalysts [65] are used. In the case of using heterogeneous catalysts, the catalytic ODS mechanism [66] , [67] , [68] , [69] , [70] is illustrated in Scheme 1 .…”

“…The oxidation process must proceed by nucleophilic attack of the sulfur in the DBT (2) on the positively charged peroxometallic complex (1) to form DBT sulfoxide (3) and regenerated polymolybdate species, respectively. Subsequently, the sulfoxide (3) undergoes further oxidation to form DBT sulfone (4) [2]. …”

“…In the near future, the requirements for sulfur content in the fuel will become more stringent -with zero sulfur emission from the transport fuel, which calls for the development of advanced technologies for ultra clean fuel. Thus, great efforts have been made todecrease the content of sulfur in diesel oil [2]. HDS can produce lower sulfur level diesel oil, but this technology needs heavy cost in operating and capital.…”

“…Many countries have formulated strict environmental regulations to limit the sulfur content in the fuels (sulfur content < 10 ppm). 1,2 In order to remove organic sulfur from petroleum products, the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) technology 3 has been widely applied in the rening enterprises. However, HDS needs strict operating conditions, 4 such as high temperature and high pressure, which result in the increase in the operational cost.…”
