The formation, reduction and emission behaviours of chlorobenzenes (CBzs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) were studied in a typical dry cement kiln in China. The operating conditions were scrutinized at various positions by monitoring the concentrations of CO, NO x , HF and HCl in the flue gas. Furthermore, the concentration, gas/particle partition and congener distribution of CBzs and PCDD/Fs were analyzed at the outlet of cyclone pre-heater, suspension pre-heater, raw mill and stack. The main PCDD/F formation zone was proven to be the first stage of pre-heater and the congener distribution of PCDD/Fs was significantly affected by the recycling ash. Specially, the concentration of CBzs continually increased with the flowing of flue gas. The final emissions of PCDD/Fs and CBzs in the flue gas were 0.016 ng I-TEQ Nm -3 and 26 µg Nm -3 , respectively. Moreover, the reduction efficiency of I-TEQ via bag filter was up to 81% and 86% for gas and particle phase PCDD/Fs, respectively. Most importantly, the mass balances indicated that raw meal was the dominant input and the rotary kiln incinerating waste was clearly a weighed PCDD/F and CBz sink. Furthermore, HCBzs correlated well with the total I-TEQ during the whole process of cement production.

a b s t r a c t ZSM-5/MCM-48 composite materials with different acidities and enhanced thermal stability have been synthesized via a simple and reliable in situ overgrowth method. The as-prepared biporous materials and the Pd-impregnated catalysts were systematically investigated by various techniques, including XRD, ICP-OES, N 2 adsorption/desorption, H 2 chemisorption, SEM, TEM/HRTEM, FT-IR, 27 Al MAS NMR, NH 3 -TPD, H 2 -TPR and XPS. The characterization results reveal that all composite catalysts exhibit high surface area, large pore volume and long pore diameter. The quantity of acid sites increases as the ZSM-5 additive amount increases, and Al atoms are in the tetrahedral coordination positions in composite materials. The activity tests demonstrate that all the Pd-loaded catalysts are active in the total elimination of benzene, while the catalytic activity values of Pd-loaded ZSM-5/MCM-48 composite catalysts are much higher than those of Pd/ZSM-5 or Pd/MCM-48 alone. Both Pd 0 and Pd 2+ are responsible for the oxidation reaction, and the catalytic activities are primarily related to the support acidity and the Pd dispersion. In addition, the stability of the composite catalysts also improves with an appropriate amount of ZSM-5 additives in MCM-48. This research shows that the novel Pd-loaded composite catalysts are promising materials in the elimination of VOCs.

The decomposition of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) has been investigated over ultrafine Ca-Fe composite oxide catalyst (Ca/Fe atomic ratio was 3.4), CaO and a-Fe 2 O 3 by using in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). Adsorption experiments on the surface of oxides monitored by in situ DRIFTS showed that partial oxidation products, i.e., phenolate and acetate species were formed on the surface of Ca-Fe composite oxide. The further studies indicated that Ca-Fe composite oxide catalyst was easier to induce the rupture of C-Cl bond and C-C bond of aromatic rings. The best catalytic activity of Ca-Fe composite oxide may be related to the acidity, which was determined by NH 3 -TPD. The products after reaction have been analyzed by XRD and chloride selective electrode. Ca-Fe composite oxide exhibited the highest extent of mineralization for organic chlorine among the different oxides tested. The combined results of current and previous experiments demonstrated that two competitive reactions took place during the decomposition process of HCB: (1) hydrodechlorination resulting in the formation of lower chlorinated benzenes and (2) oxidation of aromatic rings leading to the rupture of aromaticity and the formation of oxidation products. The latter is the major process in the coexisted competitive reaction. A possible decomposition pathway was discussed.
