Catalytic Membrane Reactors for Partial Oxidation Using Perovskite Hollow Fiber Membranes and for Partial Hydrogenation Using a Catalytic Membrane Contactor

Abstract: Two consecutive model reactions of the type A->B->C are studied in two kinds of catalytic membrane reactors. The partial oxidation of methane to synthesis gas due to CH4 + ½O2 -> CO + 2H2 was investigated in a novel type of permselective membrane reactor using perovskite hollow fibers for the selective separation of oxygen from air. Partial hydrogenations were studied in a pore-through-flow membrane reactor as a special type of a catalytic membrane contactor. The catalytically … Show more

“…This was also observed by several other researchers who studied POM in a catalytic membrane reactor. 39,41,42 Even though the H 2 selectivity improves with increasing temperature up to 750 C, however, the H 2 selectivity is still lower than CO selectivity. Therefore, this leads us to believe that a possibility of reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction to take place at the same time, since RWGS reaction is prevalent between 700 to 800 C. 43 Furthermore, as discussed earlier for the effect of H 2 :CO mixture sweep gas, based on the oxidation kinetic sequence, H 2 is more readily oxidizable to H 2 O.…”

“…[28,29] Figure 2 shows the influence of temperature on the hydrogen production rate. This rate increases as the temperature rises from 800 to 950 8C and a hydrogen flux of 3.1 cm 3 min À1 cm À2 was obtained at 950 8C.…”

“…In order to supply the required oxygen across the membrane, dense mixed ionic and electronic conducting perovskite-type membranes have much potential since external circuitry is not required (Caro et al, 2007). The ceramic oxygen permeable membranes are highly selective to O 2 and catalyze the dissociation of O 2 molecule into oxygen ions, O 2-which permeate across the membrane based on the O 2 partial pressure gradient (Smart et al, 2014).…”
