Catalytic Janus Motors on Microfluidic Chip: Deterministic Motion for Targeted Cargo Delivery

Abstract: We fabricated self-powered colloidal Janus motors combining catalytic and magnetic cap structures, and demonstrated their performance for manipulation (uploading, transportation, delivery) and sorting of microobjects on microfluidic chips. The specific magnetic properties of the Janus motors are provided by ultrathin multilayer films that are designed to align the magnetic moment along the main symmetry axis of the cap. This unique property allows a deterministic motion of the Janus particles at a large scale … Show more

“…The production rate, which corresponds to the distribution of the reactivity of the catalyst on an actual microswimmer, is assumed to be axisymmetric in the z-axis. This is a reasonable reduction for particles created using vapour deposition [51,52]. Thus, in spherical polar coordinates the production rate can be described by a function…”

“…Relation (6) says that the same swimmer following essentially similar strokes may be a pusher or a puller depending on the precise parameter values of the forces it faces. For instance, the nature of the swimmer can be changed by simply applying the driving at a different rate ( Fig.…”

“…Different techniques haven been developed to achieve cargo pickup, such as electrostatic attraction (51), specific or nonspecific binding (51)(52)(53)(54)(55)(56), magnetic interactions (57,58), hydrodynamic interactions (59), hydrophobic affinity (31), molecular imprinting (60), and even purely mechanical force (46,61). Most of these cargo transport systems require the cargo and/or the cargo carrier to be functionalized in some way (31,51,(53)(54)(55)(56)60).…”
