Catalytic Conversion of Methane at Low Temperatures: A Critical Review

Abstract: The current study reviews the recent development in the direct conversion of methane into syngas, methanol, light olefins, and aromatic compounds. For syngas production, nickelbased catalysts are considered as a good choice. Methane conversion (84%) is achieved with nearly no coke formation when the 7% Ni-1%Au/Al2O3 catalyst is used in the steam reforming of methane (SRM), whereas for dry reforming of methane (DRM), a methane conversion of 17.9% and CO2 conversion of 23.1% are found for 10%Ni/ZrOxMnOx/SiO2 ope… Show more

“…Depending on the substrate, the reaction temperature is widely different, e.g. 180 °C for methanol, 400-600 °C for different alcohols or oxygenate substrates, 700-900 °C for hydrocarbons such as methane [15][16][17]. The catalysts are either based on noble metals (e.g.…”

“…These include metals like Ni, Fe, and Co, and others. Various studies ( Khan et al, 2016 ; Abdullah et al, 2017 ; Chen et al, 2020b ; Baig et al, 2021 ) have shown the effects of different metal oxide supported catalysts like La 2 O 3 , ZiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , and TiO 2 involved in producing hydrogen ( Kim et al, 2011 ; El Hakim et al, 2021 ). In a study by Ibrahim et al , it was found that Fe over La 2 O 3 showed promising results for TMD at temperatures ranged between 500 and 700°C.…”

“…Methane is highly abundant and the simplest alkane. The utilization of methane as a carbon source to produce chemical feedstocks has attracted much attention from the viewpoint of avoiding the depletion of petroleum resources. However, the chemical conversion of methane is difficult due to its high stability. The catalytic conversion of methane is one of the effective approaches to solve this issue.…”
