India's development trajectory hinges upon its ability to leverage technological advancements, foster innovation, harness scientific assessments to address pressing societal challenges and translate them into sustainable commercial success. Prioritized investments in basic science research offer valuable, diverse, tailored and evidence-based perspectives that drive commercial payoffs. It paved pathways to new business models and encompassed sustainability transformations. The three-dimensional sustainable development goals, i.e., economic, environmental, and social, are the core of this endeavour. This chapter explores the pivotal role of funding basic science in India, underlining its potential to catalyse long-term sustainable commercial payoffs and propel the nation towards economic prosperity.
