Catalyst for the degradation of 1,1-dimethylhydrazine and its by-product N-nitrosodimethylamine in propellant wastewater

Abstract: A three-component metal catalyst was prepared and used in the process of catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) for the degradation of unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) in propellant wastewater with H2O2.

“…The catalyst increases the concentration of hydroxyl and hydroperoxyl radicals in the reaction, which react with hydrazine to form NDMA as an intermediate (Scheme , path e). The concentration of NDMA formed when testing their CuO/NiO/ZnO/γ-Al 2 O 3 heterogeneous catalyst was monitored while varying the experimental conditions; where ambient temperature and high pH were found to give the highest concentration . This reactivity is expected to be similar for other 1,1-dialkylhydrazine compounds.…”

“…Furthermore, the complete degradation of unsymmetrical and highly toxic dimethylhydrazine, a popular rocket propellant was performed. [237] The composite formation with highly magnetic NPs (Fe 3 O 4 ) can improve the reusability of plasmonic photocatalysts. Recently such magneto-plasmonic photocatalyst was reported for the degradation of rhodamine-6G (Rh6G) in textile wastewater.…”

“… 5 DMA (dimethylamine) and NH 2 · can be produced by cleavage of the N–N bond. NH 2 · can be further oxidized to form NO, which would react with DMA to form NDMA 42 (eqn (2)). In humid air, NDMA cannot be detected, probably because of the hydrogen bonds formed between water and nitrogen in UDMH, hindering the amino oxidation process (eqn (3)).…”
