Catalogue of plant fossils described in works by Kaspar M. Sternberg. Second revised edition

Abstract: This Catalogue is the second revised and expanded edition of the first edition, published in 1997 by J. Kvaček and Straková. The material presented in the original edition was completely nomenclaturally revised and newly photodocumented. This second edition provides as much updated information as it was possible to acquire. The Catalogue includes and reviews new nomenclatural and taxonomic assignments of Sternberg’s type material and taxa published after 1997. It is clear that much of the impulse to conduct th… Show more

“…The present material is particularly similar in showing similar stomata that are surrounded by microscopic ornamentation, much like the beaded sculpture characteristic for E. lyellii (Watson and Batten 1990). The presently described material differs from E. lyellii in a smaller number (12)(13)(14) of leaf segments (scars) per node instead of 18 in younger axes of E. lyellii, and similar in this respect to the genus Equisetum. We did not observe any crater pits, as are described in Equisetum subg.…”

“…The species Laccopteris elegans was proposed by Presl in Sternberg (1838), based on poorly preserved isolated pinnules. Actually the type specimen has only one pinnule preserved (Hirmer and Hoerhammer, 1936;Jung and Knobloch, 1972;Kvaček and Straková, 1997). However, before the last part of Sternberg's work was printed, Goeppert (1836) described and identified the same specimen as Astero carpus lanceolatus Sternberg (proper species authorship should be Asterocarpus lanceola tus Sternberg in Goeppert).…”
