Cataloging Databases and Web Sites in OCLC and Voyager

Abstract: Use of dynamic links from subject-based finding aids to records for electronic resources in the OPAC is suggested as one method for by-passing the OPAC search interface, thus making the library's electronic resources more accessible. This method simplifies maintenance of links to electronic resources and aids instruction by providing a single, consistent access point to them. Results of a usage study from before and after this project was completed show a consistent, often dramatic increase in use of the libra… Show more

“…The web page lists quickly collapsed under their own weight as resources continued to proliferate (Kennedy, 2004). In the following decade, divergent databases evolved into knowledge bases such as the ejournal portals which are now featured on most academic library web pages (Gray and McAdoo, 2009). Meanwhile, the traditional OPAC provided by the ILS was going through an identity crisis.…”

“…14 Gray and McAdoo describe the creation of a website at the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania Library that provides links to e-resources through subjects in order to facilitate a single and consistent access point for library users. 15 This approach resulted in increased use of the library's e-resources. At Columbia University Library, MARC records for freely available e-resources can be generated automatically and combined with subject selectors' data input workflow.…”

“…19 An A to Z list, like the one offered by RUL, is only helpful to those who know the exact name of the databases. Organizing electronic databases under subject areas has not proved to be any better for the user, particularly those searching in a multidisciplinary area or not sure of the exact subject domain of their search.…”
