The pelidnotine scarabs (Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Rutelini) are a speciose, paraphyletic assemblage of beetles that includes spectacular metallic species (“jewel scarabs”) as well as species that are ecologically important as herbivores, pollinators, and bioindicators. These beetles suffer from a complicated nomenclatural history, due primarily to 20th century taxonomic and nomenclatural errors. We review the taxonomic history of the pelidnotine scarabs, present a provisional key to genera with overviews of all genera, and synthesize a catalog of all taxa with synonyms, distributional data, type specimen information, and 107 images of exemplar species. As a result of our research, the pelidnotine leaf chafers (a paraphyletic group) include 27 (26 extant and 1 extinct) genera and 420 valid species and subspecies (419 extant and 1 extinct). Our research makes biodiversity research on this group tractable and accessible, thus setting the stage for future studies that address evolutionary and ecological trends. Based on our research, 1 new species is described, 1 new generic synonym and 12 new species synonyms are proposed, 11 new lectotypes and 1 new neotype are designated, many new or revised nomenclatural combinations, and many unavailable names are presented. Cyclocephaline scarab beetles represent the second largest tribe of the subfamily Dynastinae, and the group includes the most speciose genus of dynastines, Cyclocephala. The period following publication of Sebő Endrődi’s The Dynastinae of the World has seen a huge increase in research interest on cyclocephalines, and much of this research has not been synthesized. The objective of this catalog and bibliography is to compile an exhaustive list of taxa in Cyclocephalini. This paper provides an updated foundation for understanding the taxonomy and classification of 14 genera and over 500 species in the tribe. It discusses the history of cataloging dynastine species, clarifies issues surrounding the neotype designations in Endrődi’s revision of Cyclocephalini, synthesizes all published distribution data for cyclocephaline species, and increases accessibility to the voluminous literature on the group by providing an easily searchable bibliography for each species. We propose the nomen novum Cyclocephala rogerpauli, new replacement name, for C. nigra Dechambre.

Symphysocery, i.e. fusion of antennomeres from the phylogenetical point of view or anarthrogenesis from the morphogenetical point of view respectively, is often recorded in the “pleurostict” Scarabaeoidea. It is the normal case (92% of all individuals) in Temnorhynchus repandus Burm. Based on the morphological structures of symphysocery, the following hypotheses on the morphogenesis of the Temnorhynchus or the Pentodontini antenna respectively are elaborated: 1. The partial or entire anarthrogenesis of the flagellomeres is heritable. 2. The anarthrogenesis is transmitted autosomally. 3. The arthrogenesis goes by the “spreading fields” mechanism. 4. The building of an intersegmental area begins caudally and proceeds, both dorsally and ventrally, in cranial direction. 5. A complete or partial symphysocery is caused by genetical stopping the arthrogenesis before its termination. 6. A hypothetical model for the arthrogenesis is proposed. The last but one subdivision takes place between the antennomeres IV and (V + VI), the last one between V and VI. Sokoloff's hypothesis on antennal morphogenesis is criticised. — Mutation research in Tenebrio and Tribolium indicates that antenna oligomerism is a frequent phenomenon, but longitudinal polymerism is very rare. Hence, apomorphical reduction of the number of antennomeres bears a higher probability of convergence than apomorphical increase. — In the taxonomical part the following changes and novelties are stated. The genus‐group name Temnorhynchus Hope, 1837, is proposed as valid. The female of Temnorhynchus overlaeti Burgeon is described, the male is redescribed. A paralectotype of T. glauningi Kolbe (syn. of T. coronatus) is declared as hololectotype because of a mistake of the designator. New diagnose and a distribution map for T. rugatus Kolbe and T. flavipennis Arrow are given. T. diana chinchoxonicus Kolbe, 1887, is synonymized with T. tridentatus Lansberge, 1886. Lectotypes for the former are designated. T. diana guineensis Kolbe, 1887. is synonymized with T. luna Fairmaire, 1868. A new diagnosis and chorology for the latter are given. T. luna ab. punctiluna Endrödi, 1976, is synonymized with T. coronatus (F., 1781). T. galeatus Künckel, 1887, is synonymized with T. coronatus antiochus Fairmaire, 1868. T. congoanus Paulian, 1946, is restituated as the species‐name for the Gabonian specimens of T. raffrayi sensu Endrödi. A new diagnosis of T. raffrayi Fairmaire is given. T. zambezianus nov. sp. from Mozambique and Malawi and T. zambezianus occidentalis nov. ssp. from Zambia and Botswana are described. T. zambezianus differs constantly from the T. raffrayi‐group by the club‐like apex of the paramera.
