Castor oil and commercial thermoplastic polyurethane membranes modified with polyaniline: a comparative study

Abstract: The study of conducting polymeric membranes is decisive in some areas, as in fuel cells and electrodialysis. This work aims the study of membranes using conventional and conductive polymers blends. Two types of polyurethane were used as conventional polymers, commercial thermoplastic polyurethane and polyurethane synthesized from castor oil and 4-4-dicyclohexylmethane isocyanate. Two kinds of conducting polymers were used, polyaniline doped with organic acid and a self doped polyaniline. The polymers and the m… Show more

“…Solvents used to dissolve TPU must be highly polar organic solvents. Currently, several solution systems, mainly composed of 1,1,1,3,3,3,-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) [12], N,N-dimethyl acetamide (DMAC) [13], dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) [13], DMF [14][15][16], DMF/ ethyl acetate [17] or DMF/THF [17][18][19][20], are used for preparing electrospun TPU nanofibers. The effects of several of the above solutions on the resultant TPU nanofibers have been investigated by Mondal [13] and Cay et al [17].…”

“…Among conventional polymers, thermoplastic polyurethanes (PU) show good mechanical properties, such as stiffness and flexibility. [ 16 ] Nazemidashtarjandi et al [ 14 ] studied the impact of PU on the efficiency of the PC membrane in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) for wastewater treatment. They concluded that PU acted as a pore former and improved the toughness of the PC membrane.…”

“…Polymeric membranes have attracted much attention because of their unique advantages in the fields of biotechnology, food industry, water treatment and fuel cells [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. There are various kinds of polymer membranes available, i.e., pure polymer, blend, mixed matrix, polyelectrolyte, composite, organic-inorganic hybrid, etc., and which are nonionic, ionic, or complex in nature, to meet day-to-day challenges [ 6 , 7 , 8 ]. Recently, castor oil-based polyurethane and polyaniline membranes have been used for the application of separation technology [ 8 ].…”
