Casing Shear: Causes, Cases, Cures

Abstract: Casing impairment leads to loss of pressure integrity, pinching of production tubing, or an inability to lower workover tools. Usually, impairment arises through shear owing to displacement of the rock strata along bedding planes or along more steeply inclined fault planes. These displacements are shear failures. They are triggered by stress concentrations generated by volume changes resulting from production or injection activity. Volume changes may arise from pressure changes, temperature changes, or solids … Show more

“…It is well known that an accurate corrosion rate calculation can be achieved by first studying the properties of the reservoir and of course the fluids as well [7]. First thing to know is the composition of reservoir fluid samples obtained from drill stem testing (DST).…”

“…Only small amounts (<1%) of inorganic impurities (carbon dioxide and nitrogen) were observed in the gas samples and no hydrogen sulfide, H 2 S, was detected in any of the tests, based on measurements during DST and laboratory sample analysis. The Standing-Katz dry gas correlation was used to generate the fluid's PVT properties (gas formation volume factor, B g , and z-factor) and the method fromLee,et al [7]was used to determine gas viscosity. One type of reservoir fluid properties was used across the reservoir.…”

“…At the same time, environmental impacts induced by the hydraulic fracturing have been raised, for example, contamination of ground water, unstable growth of the hydraulic fractures, seismic risks and reactivation of existing faults, and soil contamination due to proppant chemicals (Zoback et al, 2010). Dusseault et al (2001) also studied compaction-induced shear failure of the vertical well by fluid production. Shear failure is one of the typical mechanisms of well instability.…”

“…In particular, compaction in undrained condition such as low permeability induces the increase of pore-pressure, which can change effective stress fields significantly and may result in geological failure (Kim et al, 2012a). Compaction-induced shear failure by fluid production was also studied by Dusseault et al (2001) and Bagheri and Settari (2008).…”
