“…When women with preterm PROM remote from term are given antibiotics during conservative management (see later), about one half of those remaining pregnant deliver in each subsequent week. Alternatively, a minority of women can benefit from extended latency with conservative management and a small proportion of women with membrane rupture can anticipate cessation of fluid leakage (2.6%-13%), particularly if PROM occurs as a complication of amniocentesis [12,13].…”

“…214,215 Fetal membranes may 'reseal' after PPROM indicating that the membranes possess mechanisms enabling repair. 216 This phenomenon is more common after iatrogenic PPROM compared to spontaneous PPROM. 217 Resealing is associated with longer duration of pregnancy and improved perinatal outcome, 216 therefore attempts have been made to seal the lesion in the fetal membranes to improve outcome.…”

This has been mainly directed at women with pre-viable iatrogenic ROM, in whom there is no evidence of infection.…”

“…Many authors advocate bed rest, especially when membrane rupture occurs before viability on the grounds that this encourages the hole in the membranes to reseal. Such resealing does occasionally occur, 6,7 and in such cases the amniotic fluid reaccumulates and pregnancy proceeds normally to term. However, there is no evidence that bed rest encourages this process and it carries the inevitable risk of increasing thromboembolic risks for the mother.…”
