Demand for bent pipe profiles in various industrial sectors is increasing due to considerations necessitating lightweight construction, safety, as well as space and cost savings. Lightweight construction is becoming increasingly important for economic and ecological reasons. This can be seen in the automotive and aerospace industries, as well as in civil engineering, where curved structures are often required. In order to reduce the weight of the aircraft, the aviation industry often uses spatial truss structures with bent elements. The challenge is to meet all of the stringent requirements regarding design, safety, structure, size, cost, etc., without compromising a structure's stiffness. Profiles with complicated cross-sections and so-called tailored tubes are increasingly used in the production of automotive and aircraft structures (General Aviation). Pipe and profile bending technologies are constantly being improved upon to meet the growing expectations of customers and ensure greater process efficiency. Currently, efforts are being made to increase the level of automation in this area by combining the functionality of modern bending machines with the capabilities of industrial robots. CNC bending machines currently dominate the industrial pipe bending process. A technologically advanced bending machine allows for the production of increasingly complex shapes and profiles.

Values of energy supply and demand vary within the same timeframe and are not equal. Consequently, to minimise the amount of energy wasted, there is a need to use various types of energy storing systems. Recently, one can observe a trend in which phase change materials (PCM) have gained popularity as materials that can store an excess of heat energy. In this research, the authors analysed paraffin wax (cheese wax)’s capability as a PCM energy storing material for a low temperature energy-storage device. Due to the relatively low thermal conductivity of wax, the authors also analysed open-cell ceramic Al2O3/SiC composite foams’ (in which the PCM was dispersed) influence on heat exchange process. Thermal analysis on paraffin wax was performed, determining its specific heat in liquid and solid state, latent heat (LH) of melting, melting temperature and thermal conductivity. Thermal tests were also performed on thermal energy container (with built-in PCM and ceramic foams) for transient heat transfer. Heat transfer coefficient and value of accumulated energy amount were determined.

This article presents research results regarding the development of a new manufacturing technology for an element assigned to belt conveyor flights in the extractive industry through hot die forging (of a forging with a double-sided flange) instead of the currently realized process of producing such an element by welding two flanges onto a sleeve or one flange onto a flange forging. The studies were conducted to design an innovative and low-waste technology, mainly with the use of numerical modelling and simulations, partially based on the current technology of producing a flange forging. Additionally, during the development of the forging process, the aspect of robotization was considered, both in respect of the forging tools and the process of transportation and relocation of forging between the impressions and the forging aggregates. A thermo-mechanical model of the process of producing a belt conveyor flight forging with deformable tools was elaborated by means of the Forge 3NxT program. The results of the conducted numerical modelling made it possible, among other things, to develop models of forging tools ensuring the proper manner of material flow and filling of the impressions, as well as temperature and plastic deformation distributions in the forging and also the detection of possible forging defects. For the technology elaborated this way, the tools were built together with a special instrument for flanging in the metal, and technological tests were performed under industrial conditions. The produced forgings were verified through a measurement of the geometry, by way of 3D scanning, as well as the hardness, which definitively confirmed the properness of the developed technology. The obtained technological test results made it possible to confirm that the elaborated construction, as well as the tool impressions, ensure the possibility of implementing the designed technology with the use of robotization and automatization of the forging process.
