Material removal caused by the impact and sliding of a stream of particles is a typical wear mode in the oil and gas industry. Protective coatings can be employed to increase the service life of equipment that is exposed to harsh erosive and abrasive environments. Among all the types of protective coatings and liners, polyurethane elastomers have received great atention owing to their excellent wear resistance and comparatively low cost that would allow for large-scale applications. The excellent wear resistance of polyurethane elastomers is a result of their high resilience and propensity to elastic deformation that enables the absorption of impact energy of erodant particles with minimal damage. The relation between the wear resistance of polyurethane and its mechanical properties has been the subject of previous studies. This chapter reviews the research that has been conducted to study the wear resistance of polyurethane elastomers. Testing apparatuses employed, material characterization techniques, evaluations of material removal mechanisms, and parameters with the strongest efect on wear resistance of polyurethane elastomers are herein explored. A review of inite element modelling approaches for in-depth study of the wear phenomenon of polyurethane elastomers is also presented in this chapter.

Laser Surface Melting (LSM) has the potential to increase the resistance of steels to erosion-corrosion. In this study a submerged jet impingement system containing a brine under saturated CO2 conditions with sand has been used to assess the effect of LSM on the erosion-corrosion resistance of X65 steel. Erosion-corrosion rates under different experimental conditions were deduced based on CFD-simulated results and surface profile measurements. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the morphology of erosion-corrosion damage. The results show that the erosion-corrosion rates at various impact angles can be decreased by LSM. Changes in microstructure, corrosion behaviour and hardness of X65 steel induced by laser treatment were analyzed by using optical microscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Energy Dispersive X Ray analysis (EDX) together with electrochemical polarization and hardness distribution measurements, in order to clarify how laser treatment imparts the effects on the steel.

Based on the actual operational parameters of a subsea multiphase pipeline, an experimental study on the internal corrosion of a subsea multiphase pipeline was conducted in a dynamic, high-temperature autoclave, which had a similar environment to an actual field environment, using the partial pressure of CO2 (P CO2 ), velocity of the corrosion medium, temperature, corrosion time, and corrosion inhibitor as variables. The results show that CO 2 resulted in severe localized corrosion and that the corrosion rate increased as the P CO2 and velocity increased; the corrosion rate first increased and then decreased with increasing temperature. The corrosion rate peaked at approximately 65˚C and then decreased continuously afterwards; the corrosion rate decreased as the duration of the experimental period increased. Under the operational conditions of the selected subsea pipeline, localized corrosion caused by CO 2 was still the primary corrosion risk. Several types of corrosion inhibitors could inhibit the occurrence of localized corrosion for a short time period; however, most corrosion inhibitors could not completely inhibit localized corrosion.
