Finding practicable and cost-effective enrichment for cattle in feedlots is challenging. While enrichment should not negatively impact productivity, it could assist in improving feedlot sustainability, by addressing societal concern that cattle have restricted, unnatural lives. In a feedlot 250km northeast of Perth, 287 mixedbreed B. taurus cattle were provided with two different exercise treatments (1 = exercised in-pen, 2 = exercised in laneway) and a control pen. Cattle were exercised using low-stress stock handling 2-3 times/week for approximately 20min between days 40-80 of a 120-day feeding program. Body weights, crush temperament and crush exit speeds were collected on days 40 and 80, while behavioural testing was conducted on days 41, 60 and 79 in home pens. Body weight was found to significantly increase for all pens, however, weight gains between treatments did not significantly differ (p < 0.05). However, a smaller and higher range of weight gains were found for exercised pens. The control pen had two animals lose weight, suggesting that while enrichment did not negatively impact productivity, there was a possible positive influence. Cattle exercised in the laneway were found to be less responsive and recovered quickly post exposure to a novel human. Cattle exercised in-pen were less reactive during avoidance, and novel person tests, showing an improved human-animal relationship. This pilot study showed that exercise impacted cattle behaviour and the human-animal relationship, which could assist feedlot sustainability.

Cattle are a social species in which social mixing can induce physical and psychosocial stress; however, the impact of social mixing on cattle welfare is unknown. Two different sources of genetically similar Angus crossbred steers were transported to the same feedlot and assigned to a pen where they were either socially mixed or housed with individuals from their source herds. Social mixing did not impact average daily gains in pens, feed intake, or feed efficiency; pens of socially mixed steers were more active. Sources differed in their responses to social mixing. One source was unaffected, whereas social mixing negatively impacted productivity for the other source. Irrespective of social mixing, the sources differed in the amount of time per day they spent ruminating and drinking. Group analyses indicated that socially mixing two sources of feedlot steers did not negatively impact group productivity, yet the impacts that were observed at the individual level suggest that prior experiences may influence their ability to cope with social stress, emphasizing the importance of early-life experiences to long-term welfare and productivity. Social mixing was not universally detrimental to cattle welfare, and the source of cattle may have the greatest affect on their performance regardless of whether a social mixing event has occurred.

Impor sapi bakalan untuk memenuhi kebutuhan daging nasional telah diatur di dalam Peraturan Menteri Pertanian Republik Indonesia Nomor 108/Permentan/PD.410/9/2014. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji performa sapi impor yang didatangkan dari Australia berdasarkan Pertambahan Bobot Badan (PBB). Observasi dilakukan pada sapi impor bakalan dari bangsa Brahman Cross yang terdiri dari 2 jenis, yaitu heifers dan steers. Fokus pengamatan pada PBB sapi dengan Bobot Datang (BD) kisaran 200, 300, dan 400 kg. Sapi impor tersebut digemukkan di perusahaan feedlot minimal selama 106 hari. Analisis data menggunakan analisis deskriptif dan analisis independent samples test dengan program aplikasi IBM SPSS Statistics 26. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa PBB maksimal sapi impor bangsa Brahman Cross jenis heifers pada berat kedatangan (BD) 200, 300, dan 400 kg masing-masing ialah 2,01; 1,81; dan 1,45 kg dengan rata-rata PBB masing-masing sebesar 1,40; 1,17; dan 1,10 kg, sedangkan PBB maksimal untuk jenis steers pada berat kedatangan (BD) 200, 300, dan 400 kg masing-masing ialah 1,86; 2,53; dan 1,96 kg dengan rata-rata PBB masing-masing sebesar 1,44; 1,43; dan 1,43 kg. Kesimpulan menunjukkan bahwa sapi impor bangsa Brahman Cross jenis steers memiliki PBB lebih tinggi jika dibandingkan dengan jenis heifers. Saran untuk perusahaan importir sapi potong bakalan hendaknya memilih jenis steers pada berat kedatangan (BD) 300 kg, sebab sapi memiliki potensi PBB yang maksimal.
