Future 5G communication systems require more demanding performances than the existing cellular communication systems, e.g., 10 to 100 Mbps user data rate and much larger cellular spectrum efficiency. The well-used multiple access methods like CDMA and OFDMA are hard to achieve these challenging requirements simultaneously even with advanced signal processing techniques and base station cooperation. Recently, massive MIMO has gain much attention since it provides large signal dimensions that can be used to improve future 5G cellular system performance. This tutorial paper describes a recently proposed multiple access scheme called multipath division multiple access (MDMA) based on massive antennas and multipath channel characteristics in millimeter wave band, which offers uniform user data rate and achieves high cellular spectrum efficiency for 5G systems. We describe the fundamental principle and show the uplink and downlink block diagrams, control signaling and the call setup process. Besides, benefits of using MDMA as a multiple access scheme are discussed. Finally, practical concerns are addressed for future research directions.

A Systematic Review on NOMA Variants for 5G and Beyond

Over the last few years, interference has been a major hurdle for successfully implementing various end-user applications in the fifth-generation (5G) of wireless networks. During this era, several communication protocols and standards have been developed and used by the community. However, interference persists, keeping given quality of service (QoS) provision to end-users for different 5G applications. To mitigate the issues mentioned above, in this paper, we present an in-depth survey of state-ofthe-art non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) variants having power and code domains as the backbone for interference mitigation, resource allocations, and QoS management in the 5G environment. These are future smart communication and supported by device-to-device (D2D), cooperative communication (CC), multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO), and heterogeneous networks (HetNets). From the existing literature, it has been observed that NOMA can resolve most of the issues in the existing proposals to provide contention-based grant-free transmissions between different devices. The key differences between the orthogonal multiple access (OMA) and NOMA in 5G are also discussed in detail. Moreover, several open issues and research challenges of NOMA-based applications are analyzed. Finally, a comparative analysis of different existing proposals is also discussed to provide deep insights to the readers.

A Comparison Between Tone-Based and Code-Based Cell Search Schemes for Multipath Division Multiple Access

Cell search procedure is an essential and critical process in an early stage when the user equipment (UE) is powered on. It mainly comprises symbol and frame timing synchronization, frequency offset compensation, and base station (BS) identification. Among the current exiting 3G, 4G and 5G mobile networks, the UE completes the initial cell search based on different code sequences. In this paper, we investigate and compare two kinds of cell search methodology. Tone-based and code-based methods are explored for massive antenna systems. The detailed description and analysis are offered for two approaches. Simulation results indicate that the tone-based cell search not only possesses stable performance with respect to path numbers but also outperforms the code-based one in general channel realizations in terms of cell search error probability. The results suggest that the tone-based cell search could be used for 5G communication systems.INDEX TERMS initial cell search, tone-based cell search, 5G, cellular systems, massive antennas
