Case studies associated with the 10 major geodiversity-related topics

Murray Gray

Abstract: This paper outlines the 10 major topics related to geodiversity that have emerged since the concept was first introduced in 1993, 30 years ago. After a short introduction, each of the 10 topics is then illustrated by a relevant case study. The 10 topics (italics) and their case studies (bold) are as follows: 1. Celebrating , International Geodiversity Day ; 2. Measurement/Assessment , Potential role of remote sensing … Show more

“…The spatial modeling domain for this study is geodiversity assessment. The concept of geodiversity emerged in the 1990s in the wake of the Convention on Biological Diversity at the Rio Earth Summit [39,40]. Geodiversity encompasses the range of non-living components within an ecosystem, including geology, earth surface relief, soil cover, surface and groundwater, and climate [41,42].…”

“…Despite the numerous achievements in the international research of geoheritage, geoconservation, geodiversity, geoparks, and geotourism made during the three past decades [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8], the inventory of geosites still remains on the agenda [9][10][11]. Finding new heritage objects of this kind is especially urgent for large and geologically rich territories, the geoheritage of which has not been explored extensively.…”

“…In this themed issue, Hjort et al [4] in particular aim to make strides 'Towards a taxonomy of geodiversity', considering a language that everyone can rally around, drawing inspiration from the taxonomy we use to define living organisms. We wanted to give readers a sense of the breadth of geodiversity in this themed issue, so Gray's [5] paper provides 10 case studies across different themes to give readers who are and are not well versed in geodiversity alike the chance to appreciate its geographic, practical and conceptual scope. All of the papers relate to sustainability in some way, but the contribution by van Ree et al [6] tackles the topic directly, in relation to urban subsurface exploitation and its link to human wellbeing, highlighting insufficient frameworks for subsurface development and use, and suggesting ways forward.…”
