Case report: Severe acute hepatitis in a 22-month-old Chinese boy with Omicron sub-variant BA.2.38

Abstract: The etiology of severe acute hepatitis (SAH) in children is various. We describe the first Chinese case of severe acute hepatitis in a 22-month-old boy with the mild illness of Omicron sub-variant BA.2.38. With the application of Compound Glycyrrhizin Injection (CGI), the patient gradually recovered from acute liver injury (ALI). This case highlights the possibility of severe ALI in children with the non-critical illness of SARS-CoV-2. The management of SAH associated with the pandemic presents challenges for … Show more

“…Lastly, the formation of gallstones leads to bile stasis, further causing liver damage (Trauner et al, 2008). Fortunately, due to the liver's exceptional regenerative and repair abilities (Fausto, 2000), along with hepatoprotective treatment with compound glycyrrhizin (Cao et al, 2006;Li et al, 2019;Chen et al, 2022), the child's liver function normalized approximately 1 month following the removal of these harmful factors and subsequent follow-up.…”

“…Moreover, several cases in the literature reported that some children with an asymptomatic or mild presentation of COVID-19 disease developed long COVID-19 liver manifestations, including acute liver failure or acute hepatitis cholestasis. The outcome varies widely from life-threatening and a need for liver transplant to total recovery after steroid treatment (17)(18)(19)(20). Reports in the literature on liver involvement in neonates with SARS-CoV-2 infection were sparse.…”
