Case Report of Cryptococcus Albidus Peritonitis in a Peritoneal Dialysis Patient and a Review of the Literature

Abstract: Cryptococcus albidus is a saprophytic yeast linked to just 26 reports of human infection in the world literature. Here, we report the first case of C. albidus peritonitis, in a patient with end-stage renal disease and hepatitis C-associated cirrhosis who is on peritoneal dialysis. The patient was treated successfully with a week-long course of amphotericin B. Non-neoformans cryptococcal infections present a clinical challenge, because they are difficult to diagnose and lack established guidelines for treatment… Show more

“…This can also be the case with some yeasts found in sand, such as Cryptococcus uzbekistanensis , that was recently reported 29 to cause a human infection. In this context, it should also be added that Cr albidus, which is a known environmental fungus, was also reported to be involved in rare human systemic infections in immunocompromised individuals 30,31 . We could not detect the presence of dermatophytes in the Israeli beach sands, which possibly might be due to the high temperature of the sands.…”

The presence of dermatophytes was reported rather scarcely in the literature, 32,33 and might be associated with specific ecological conditions, such as those found on the Madeira archipelago.…”

“…A considerable number of pooled cases (5/18) occurred in the past 5 years, which is likely to be related to the increasing number of renal dialysis patients worldwide [ 3 ]. Most of the current cases were collected from medical centers in major cities worldwide, including New York in the USA, Osaka in Japan, and Shanghai in China [ 13 , 14 , 22 ]. Thus, the availability of modern diagnostic tools might be relevant to the relatively high level of diagnosed cryptococcal infections in these cities.…”

“…In 2015, Ragupathi et al [ 29 ] reported the first case of C. albidus peritonitis in a patient infected with hepatitis C who was undergoing peritoneal dialysis due to renal failure. The patient was treated with amphotericin B; however, infections of non- neoformans cryptococcal species presented a clinical challenge because they are complicated to diagnose and treat.…”
