Case report of bilateral inflammatory breast cancer

Abstract: Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rare entity that makes up 1-3% of breast cancers. As the diagnosis of IBC is mainly clinical, for the inexperienced the clinical appearance can mimic mastitis leading to diagnostic delay and it is often associated with a poor prognosis. Very few cases of bilateral IBC are reported in the literature, all of which have been synchronous. We report an unusual case of bilateral metachronous IBC each with complete clinico-pathological response after treatment with neoadjuvant ch… Show more

“…Two of these cases involved HER2-positive breast cancer, and one involved TNBC. One case of bilateral IBC with bilateral carcinomatous pleurisy ( 14 ) and two cases of metachronous IBC found within one year after the first operation for unilateral IBC have been reported ( 15 , 16 ). The factors involved in the pathogenesis and progression of bilateral IBC remain unclear.…”

“…In rare cases, thyroid dermopathy (almost always associated with ophthalmopathy) can present as "peau d' orange" [10] in different areas of the skin in both sexes. Moreover, bilateral inflammatory breast cancer is a very rare entity [11] but it should be ruled out in all cases because of poor prognosis and the necessity of immediate systemic treatment. Although there is no consensus on the definition of breast edema and standardized assessment criteria, common criteria for breast edema found in the literature are an increased volume of the breast, peau d'orange, heaviness of the breast and redness of the skin [12], all included in our case report.…”

“…As such, the differential diagnosis includes an inflammatory breast cancer which is usually unilateral and associated with erythema and axillary lymphadenopathies. 3,4 Secondary inflammatory involvement of the breasts from an extramammary primary such as ovarian or lung cancer through lymphatic spread was ruled out by CT scan. 1,2 …”
