Case Report: Kikuchi-Fujimoto Disease: A case of supraclavicular lymphadenopathy

Abstract: Kikuchi-Fujimoto Disease (KFD), also known as histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis, is a rare cause of cervical lymphadenopathy. Patients usually present with localized lymphadenopathy, fever and fatigue. Because of the poorly understood etiology, it can be mistaken for an infectious disease or even malignance. Here we discuss a case of KFD that initially presented with left sided cervical lymphadenopathy that later progressed to left supraclavicular lymph nodes. Due to its characteristic overlap with other d… Show more

“…It is a self-limiting disorder that occurs sub-acutely and commonly presents with fever with cervical lymphadenopathy [ 6 ]. Lymphoma, tuberculosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and adult-onset Still’s disease are the main differential diagnoses for Kikuchi disease [ 3 ]. While the unilateral involvement of the posterior cervical lymph nodes is the most typical presentation of the disease, a few other uncommon presentations cause diagnostic difficulty [ 8 ].…”

“…It was first described in Japan in 1972 [ 2 ]. The most common clinical presentation is unexplained fever and lymphadenopathy, mainly affecting the cervical lymph node group [ 3 ]. Skin rashes, gastrointestinal symptoms, and splenomegaly are the main extra nodal manifestations.…”

“…A fever is usually the first symptom in KFD and can be accompanied by upper respiratory symptoms (30-50%), weight loss, night sweats, nausea, vomiting, sore throat, arthralgia, splenomegaly, rash, and leukopenia (about 50%) [9]. Unilateral tender lymphadenopathy involving the jugular and posterior cervical lymph nodes is the most common clinical feature [7], although supraclavicular lymphadenopathy has also been noted [10]. Axillary lymphadenopathy has been reported, but is a rare manifestation of the disease [11,12] and this was seen in our patient.…”
