CASE REPORT: Extrahepatic Biliary Schwannoma

Abstract: Schwannoma (neurilemoma or neurinoma) rarely develops in the biliary tract. We report here a case of extrahepatic biliary schwannoma found in a 47-yr-old Japanese woman presenting with obstructive jaundice. The radiological imaging studies were suggestive of nonepithelial tumor involving the common bile duct. The patient underwent tumor resection. The tumor extended inward and outward from the wall of the common bile duct in the shape of a dumbbell. The extraductal tumor was solid with microcystic changes, whi… Show more

“…Peripheral nerve sheath tumors represent 2-6% of GIST [4]. Schwannomas of the biliary tract are extremely rare and occur because of an abundant network of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve fibers to the wall of the gallbladder and bile duct [3,5]. Since 1955, only 11 cases of schwannoma of CBD have been reported, this being the twelfth one [6].…”
