Case Report: Abnormally Low Glycosylated Hemoglobin A1c Caused by Clinically Silent Rare β-Thalassemia in a Tujia Chinese Woman

Abstract: BackgroundGlycosylated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is an important means of monitoring blood glucose and diagnosing diabetes. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is the most widely used method to detect HbA1c in clinical practice. However, the results of HbA1c by HPLC are susceptible to hemoglobinopathy. Here, we report a case of discordantly low HbA1c with an abnormal chromatogram caused by rare β-thalassemia.Case DescriptionA 36-year-old Tujia Chinese woman presented with an abnormally low HbA1c level o… Show more

“…In regions with a high prevalence of haemoglobinopathy, GA’s position must be emphasized in blood glucose control assessment and diabetes screening ( 21 ). Screening based totally on affected person’s HbA1c concentration and fasting blood glucose, might lead to failure in diagnosing pre-diabetes ( 13 ).…”

“…HbA1c is an indicator of Hb glycosylation within the most recent 3 months. Haemoglobinopathy affects the value of HBA1c leading to misinterpretation of the glucose profile [ 162 ]. Zhang X. et al investigated whether the HBA1c values in combination with gestational DM patients were affected by minor BTH.…”
