Case of victims of modern imaging technology: Increased information noise concealing the diagnosis

Abstract: We present a case of tubercular arthritis who underwent numerous unnecessary investigations what is known as “victims of modern imaging technology” or VOMIT. Today there is an exponential rise in the volume of the medical imaging, part of which is contributed by unnecessary and unjustified indications. We discuss about the untoward effects of the uninhibited and careless use of modern imaging modalities and possible ways to avoid. Skeletal manifestation of the tuberculosis is still common in the endemic countr… Show more

“…There has been an exponential rise in medical imaging which, in some cases, is unnecessary. This has led to a new entity coined 'victims of modern imaging technology' or VOMIT, 7 when investigations may be unwarranted or done for unjustified indications, resulting in adverse effects or discomfort for patients and their families. Imaging a young or uncooperative child, entails the risks associated with general anaesthesia, as well as increased radiation exposure, and can also cause anxiety for parents.…”

“…Given the increasing dependence on imaging in order to make a patient diagnosis and thus the increased usage of CT scans and other imaging modalities, asymptomatic and idiopathic intussusception might be picked up more than usual [7] . Care was taken in our case to ensure that our patient was not a part of being a ‘Victim of modern imaging technology (VOMIT)’ ie someone who undergoes multiple investigations which are mostly unnecessary [8] .…”
