Background/ObjectiveSilage characteristics of grass materials directly affect their silage qualities. To expand the source of silage raw materials and develop mixed silages underlined by exploring the positive interactions between forage grasses and legumes, three gramineous grasses, Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum), king grass (Pennisetum sinese), and forage maize (Zea mays) were separately mixed ensiled with a combination of four forage legumes including Medicago sativa, Vicia villosa, Vicia sativa, and Trifolium repens.MethodsThe chemical composition and fermentation quality of the mixed silages were analyzed and compared with those of the sole silages of these three grasses, as well as the diversity of microbial communities, through the 16S/ITS full-length sequencing.ResultsThe results showed that the inclusion of forage legumes could somewhat improve the fermentation quality, as indicated by significantly (p < 0.05) higher crude protein and lactic acid contents while lower neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber contents and pH values, compared with the sole silages. Among the three types of mixed silages, the mixed king grass had the highest dry matter and crude protein content as well as lowest neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber content. Meanwhile, the bacterial and fungal communities in the mixed silages were influenced by increased the relative abundance of lactic acid bacteria, which inhibited the proliferation of undesirable bacteria, such as Hafnia alvei, Enterobacter cloacae, and Serratia proteamaculanss. Co-occurrence networks identified 32 nodes with 164 positive and 18 negative correlations in bacteria and 80 nodes with two negative and 76 positive correlations in fungi during fermentation.ConclusionInclusion of forage legume to grasses can improve the fermentation quality and optimize the structure of microbial community, which appears to be a feasible strategy to enhance the forage resource utilization.

Two-dimensional (2D) photocatalysts have attracted considerable research interest in the past decades due to their unique optical, physical and chemical properties. Constructing 2D/2D heterojunctions with large interface area has been considered as an effective approach to enhance the transfer rate and the separation efficiency of the charge carriers, leading to dramatic increase in the photocatalytic performance of the photocatalysts. Here, the state-of-the-art progress on heterojunctions based on 2D materials is reviewed, including the photocatalysis principles using 2D heterojunctions, the categories of 2D heterojunctions and their application in different photocatalytic reactions, and the theoretical studies of the 2D heterojunctions. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of the 2D heterojunctions are also discussed. Finally, the ongoing challenges and opportunities for the future development of 2D photocatalysts with built-in heterojunctions are proposed.

Well-Being of Recent Migrants: The Role of Place-Based and Social Connections

Place-based and social connections provide a sense of belonging and can act as protective factors against stress. Following migration, disruption to these connections can be particularly challenging when facing migration-related stressors in a new place. As a result, many migrants desire to form new connections, though they often also want to maintain their original connections. It may be beneficial for migrants to find continuity between their former and current place-based and social connections, however, it is unclear how differences between these connections are reconciled. To better understand how migrants bring together former and current connections (or not), a series of mixed methods studies was conducted with recent migrants in Canada to assess the impact of place-based and social connections and how negotiating incompatibilities between former and new connections can strengthen a sense of belonging to new surroundings. Study 1 (N=67), a photovoice study, revealed that positive places provided reminders of home, upheld aspects of pre-migration identity, helped make new connections, and allowed reflection on migration experiences. Although negative places primarily represented challenges, participants often saw the value in these challenges in shaping their migration journey. Essentially, experience in positive and negative places both played a role in shaping place-based and social connections. Study 2 (N=117), a survey study, determined that place identity and social identity mediated the relationships between acculturation strategies with migrant well-being. The relationship between integration with social identity promoted well-being whereas the relationships between assimilation and marginalization with place/social identity appeared to diminish well-being. Study 3 (N=74) involved a controlled, multi-meeting intervention study that targeted the iii development of either place-based or social connections to support post-migration wellbeing. Qualitative analyses suggested that finding balance, reappropriating former connections, making situational adaptations, and relying on connections helped migrants to negotiate incompatibilities between the former and current place. In addition, providing knowledge and skills to manage place-based and social connections appeared to improve post-migration outlook. These studies underscore the potential role of placebased and social connections in resiliency during migration transition and may provide a better understanding of the variability in the incidence of well-being concerns among recent migrants.First and foremost, I want to thank my supervisor and mentor, Dr. Kim Matheson, for her invaluable direction, expertise, and insights throughout this endeavour.
