Developing conceptual and computational frameworks to support Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in formalizing their creativity, improving their capability to innovate, and limiting their drawbacks in tackling wider competitors is an important research topic in the Knowledge Management field. Although these companies are characterized by high levels of creativity, which allow them to design and manufacture innovative products, they have often significant technological gaps with respect to wider organizations and may suffer significantly in terms of loss of key personnel and company experiential knowledge and competences. This paper presents Complex Knowledge Structures (CKS), a methodological and computational framework for representation and management of collective creativity of SMEs based on storytelling and Case Based Reasoning (CBR) paradigms.

A new and challenging scenario for Knowledge Management (KM) is the development of conceptual and computational frameworks to support Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in formalizing their knowledge models, improving their capability to innovate and limiting their drawbacks in tackling wider competitors. SMEs are companies whose headcount or turnover falls below certain limits. SMEs are typically characterized by high levels of creativity, which allow them to design and manufacture innovative products. However, SMEs are also characterized by significant technological gaps with respect to wider organizations and may suffer significantly in terms of loss of key personnel and company experiential knowledge and competences. This paper presents Complex Knowledge Structures (CKS), a methodological and computational framework for representation and management of experiential and social knowledge of SMEs based on storytelling and Case Based Reasoning (CBR) paradigms. The application of the framework will be exemplified within the context of Flexibly Beyond project, in which CKS has been proposed to support SMEs of the shoe manufacturing industry in the North Eastern Italy.

From handicraft prototypes to limited serial productions: Exploiting knowledge artifacts to support the industrial design of high quality products

This paper presents a conceptual and computational framework to support experts in the design and manufacturing of high quality products. The framework is based on the development of specific knowledge artifacts characterized by tools for the management of functional, procedural, and experiential knowledge. As a case study, the GUITAR HERO project is presented. The project aims at building a knowledge-based system to support experts of a handicraft enterprise involved in the design and manufacturing of electric guitars characterized by an aluminum body. The domain of the project is extremely innovative, because electric guitars are typically manufactured with different kinds of wood rather than metals or other materials. To this aim, an ontological representation of the electric guitar has been implemented exploiting NavEditOW, a computational framework for the codification, navigation, and querying of ontologies over the Internet, based on the OWL language.
